How to read this table
Each row summarises one calendar year of daily gold prices. Open is the first available daily price of the year, close the last, and average the mean of all daily prices. High and low are the highest and lowest daily prices. Change compares close with open. Figures are in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g); divide by 31.1035 for the price per gram.
Yearly averages are the fairest way to compare long periods, because a single day can be distorted by a spike. Click any year from 2000 to see its monthly averages, per-gram prices and a comparison with the previous year.
What long-term gold history tells you
Gold has moved in long cycles: a huge rally in the 1970s, two decades of weak prices to 2001, a run to 2011, a correction to 2015 and a new bull market since. Long flat periods are normal, which is why gold is usually held for years rather than months. For local-currency context, see the live prices in EUR, GBP and INR, or read why the gold price changes.
