What is 22K gold?
22 karat gold is 91.6% pure gold and is the traditional jewelry standard in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Gulf. It is also used for gold bullion coins such as the British Sovereign and American Gold Eagle.
Indian bridal jewelry, BIS-hallmarked necklaces, bangles and investment coins are typically 22k. Indian hallmarks show 22K916.
22k has an intense yellow color close to pure gold but is slightly harder, which is why it is preferred for coins and heirloom jewelry.
How the 22K gold price per gram is calculated
The world gold price is quoted for pure gold in US dollars per troy ounce. Dividing by 31.1035 gives the price of one gram of pure gold, currently $134.85. 22K gold is 91.6% gold, so we multiply by 0.916: $134.85 × 0.916 = $123.52 per gram. In euros that is €110.38 and in pounds £93.37.
Example
A 22K chain weighing 12.4 grams contains 11.36 grams of pure gold. Its melt value today is $1,532. If a buyer pays 85% of melt, you would receive about $1,302.
