How to read this table
Each row summarises one calendar year of daily silver prices. Open is the first available daily price of the year, close the last, and average the mean of all daily prices. High and low are the highest and lowest daily prices. Change compares close with open. Figures are in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g); divide by 31.1035 for the price per gram.
Yearly averages are the fairest way to compare long periods, because a single day can be distorted by a spike. Click any year from 2000 to see its monthly averages, per-gram prices and a comparison with the previous year.
What long-term silver history tells you
Silver has been far more volatile than gold, with spikes in 1980 and 2011 followed by long declines. Its industrial use ties it to the economic cycle. Compare it with gold on the gold/silver ratio page. For local-currency context, see the live prices in EUR, GBP and INR, or read why the gold price changes.
