What is 14K gold?
14 karat gold contains 58.5% pure gold and is the most popular jewelry gold in the United States, Europe and Russia. It strikes a balance between rich color, durability and price.
Engagement rings, wedding bands, chains and watch cases are frequently 14k. In Europe and the former Soviet Union you will see the 585 stamp; older Soviet pieces are often 583.
14k has a warm yellow color that is slightly softer than 18k, and it is the most common base for white gold settings.
How the 14K gold price per gram is calculated
The world gold price is quoted for pure gold in US dollars per troy ounce. Dividing by 31.1035 gives the price of one gram of pure gold, currently $134.85. 14K gold is 58.5% gold, so we multiply by 0.585: $134.85 × 0.585 = $78.89 per gram. In euros that is €70.49 and in pounds £59.63.
Example
A 14K chain weighing 12.4 grams contains 7.25 grams of pure gold. Its melt value today is $978.22. If a buyer pays 85% of melt, you would receive about $831.49.
