What is 24K gold?
24 karat gold is pure gold, usually 99.9% (999) or 99.99% (9999) fine. It is the reference against which every other karat is priced.
Investment bars, Canadian Maple Leaf and Austrian Philharmonic coins, and traditional Chinese chuk kam jewelry are 24k.
24k gold is bright, deep yellow and very soft, so it bends and scratches easily and is rarely used for gem settings.
How the 24K gold price per gram is calculated
The world gold price is quoted for pure gold in US dollars per troy ounce. Dividing by 31.1035 gives the price of one gram of pure gold, currently $134.74. 24K gold is 99.9% gold, so we multiply by 0.999: $134.74 × 0.999 = $134.60 per gram. In euros that is €120.23 and in pounds £101.74.
Example
A 24K chain weighing 12.4 grams contains 12.39 grams of pure gold. Its melt value today is $1,669. If a buyer pays 85% of melt, you would receive about $1,419.

- Find the 24K or 999 hallmark and weigh items separately by karat. Mixed lots are often paid at the lowest karat.
- Remove stones, pearls and non-gold parts before weighing, or ask the buyer to deduct their weight.
- Get at least three quotes and compare them with the live melt value on this page.
- Use our scrap gold calculator when you have several items of different karats.
