What is 9K gold?
9 karat gold is the lowest purity that can legally be sold as gold in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It contains 37.5% pure gold, with the rest usually silver and copper, which makes it hard-wearing and affordable.
You will find 9k in British wedding bands, signet rings, chains and budget fashion jewelry. It is less common in the United States, where 10k is the legal minimum.
Because almost two thirds of the alloy is other metals, 9k has a paler yellow color and can tarnish slightly over many years.
How the 9K gold price per gram is calculated
The world gold price is quoted for pure gold in US dollars per troy ounce. Dividing by 31.1035 gives the price of one gram of pure gold, currently $134.85. 9K gold is 37.5% gold, so we multiply by 0.375: $134.85 × 0.375 = $50.57 per gram. In euros that is €45.19 and in pounds £38.23.
Example
A 9K chain weighing 12.4 grams contains 4.65 grams of pure gold. Its melt value today is $627.06. If a buyer pays 85% of melt, you would receive about $533.00.

- Remove stones, pearls and non-gold parts before weighing, or ask the buyer to deduct their weight.
- Get at least three quotes and compare them with the live melt value on this page.
- Use our scrap gold calculator when you have several items of different karats.
